Sport and PE
The National curriculum requires school to provide ‘a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities.’
Here at Salesbury we desire to give pupils the chance to develop their physical literacy through the practise of fundamental movement skills. Pupils are given opportunities to improve their own and other’s performances through the use of mini plenaries, evaluation and positive, constructive feedback. We want pupils to be aware of tactical awareness and effective team play across a range of sports and to develop greater independence in sport.
Pupils need to face a range of scenarios where they experience, and have to deal with, pressure in some way. Pupils learn new skills by taking part in competitive groups ranging from two pupils to groups of seven or eight. Pupils are also encouraged to learn from others’ performances. Where possible, staff model desired skills tactics and movement.
Through the use of Bloom’s Taxonomy, pupils are challenged to use new taught skills creatively and tactically within a range of competitive game situations. Example questions / question stems are:
How is this skill related to attacking in this game?
Find a weakness in your play and think of a way of turning it into a strength.
Design a small sided game to develop these passing skills.
What did you think of that performance (of this tactic/skill)?
What was better about that attempt than...?
In lessons, pupils are put into pressure situations, as a way of using new skills learned, but having to psychologically cope with pressure that may affect how they use them.

Sport at Salesbury
It is our aim at school to help pupils develop their physical literacy and their mental approach to sport and competition
We hope that by engaging in a vast range of sporting experiences, children will find an area of sport they enjoy and build physical activity into their daily life.
We hope that all children leave Salesbury prepared to embrace PE at Key Stage 3 and recognise how physical activity benefits their mind and body.
