Curriculum Rooted In Faith.png

With the world at our feet, we celebrate the world God created. The children gain a sense of wonder, investigating where places are, how landscapes are formed, how the Earth’s features are shaped and

how parts of the world differ. We provide opportunities to develop geographical knowledge and experiences : collecting and analysing data, using maps, atlases, globes, aerial photographs and digital mapping to name, identify and locate countries, continents and oceans aspiring children to appreciate our world. We feel it is important to provide children with opportunities to gain ‘real life’ experiences.

Our curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable. Geography is taught on a two year cycle; as a subject focus unit and is also a subject bias alongside Science, History and Design and Technology curriculum focus units. Throughout the year, each year group focuses on specific key knowledge to support subject retrieval. This allows to build on pupils’ prior knowledge throughout the key stages.

Each Geography unit is launched with a ‘hook’. This allows children to become curious about their forthcoming learning, promote thinking and ask questions, which in turn provide the

foundations for the curriculum unit. Teachers then take the children on a learning journey through the unit. The journey then concludes with an ‘outcome’ which consolidates the skills

and learning from the curriculum unit.

The units are planned collaboratively within each key stage, making links to inspirational people, a cla ss novel, a poem and visits or visitors. Each classroom develops a curriculum

working wall, displaying key vocabulary, knowledge and skills to support curriculum content.

Parental Partnership is key, the Knowledge Organisers ensure pupils, parents and carers are mindful of the coverage within each unit. Each knowledge organiser outlines the knowledge, vocabulary, definitions and community links being taught.

With creativity at the core, Geography is delivered through curriculum units over a two-year cycle. Each key stage ensures the National Curriculum subject content is intertwined throughout each unit. Teachers consider the six steps of the Bloom’s Taxonomy elements and higher order questioning to support the structure of the curriculums effective teaching and learning.

Geography Curriculum Units taught across a two-year cycle. Each unit within each Key Stage has a progression of knowledge to be learned, understood and applied. We believe Geography should be learned through the soles of the feet so many outdoor experiences are provided.

Our broad and balanced geography curriculum at Salesbury provides opportunities for pupils to develop a deep knowledge, understanding of their local area and its place within the wider

geographical context, a geographical understanding, as well as children’s spiritual, moral, social and

cultural development. Through this our children will have developed the geographical knowledge to help them explore, navigate and understand the world around them and their place within it.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development within Geography

Spiritual

Within our Geography curriculum we seek to develop the children's spirituality. As they discover more about the world, we provide opportunities to reflect on their own values and beliefs, as well as those of others. Children are encouraged to explore and express their own feelings about people, cultures, places and the environments. Our curriculum allows our children to delve into questions posed about inequality and injustice.

Moral

The children are provided with opportunities to gain an understanding of what is right and wrong. Geography supports moral development by exploring issues such as 'Should the rainforest be exploited?' and 'How do houses developments have a negative impact on wildlife?'. We use discussion, debating and drama to explore Geographical concepts such as global warming, Fairtrade, deforestations, poverty and natural disasters.

Social

Geography enhances social development and allows the children to explore issues such as climate change, global warming and how these issues can have an impact on the world and to what extent.

Fieldwork allows children to develop a greater degree of self-discipline and develops collaborative skills.

Cultural

Developing an understanding of place knowledge is a key aspect within Geography. Children develop an understanding of their local area and compare it with more distant localities. The children then begin to develop an awareness of cultural traditions and customs associated with the place of study as well as those in their own community.
