PSHE (Learning for Life)
The overarching aim for PSHE education at Salesbury School is to provide pupils with:
· accurate and relevant knowledge in order to thrive now and in the future
· opportunities to turn that knowledge into personal understanding
· opportunities to explore, clarify and if necessary challenge, their own and others’ values, attitudes, beliefs, rights and responsibilities
the skills, language and strategies they need in order to live healthy, safe, fulfilling, responsible and balanced lives.
In PSHE children will experience:
· Debates and discussions
· Opportunities to use drama, freeze frame, ICT skills, play scripts
· Visits or visitors
· Empathy for others
· Lessons about how to stay safe in all aspects of their life
· Lessons about physical and mental wellbeing
· Higher order questioning
· Opportunities to put their values and beliefs into practise
· Opportunities to use their knowledge to help others in the community or wider world
· Positive feedback that may challenge their thinking and beliefs
SEND
SEND pupils will have work planned and adapted to meet their learning needs. They will be offered support in the classroom. Children will learn life skills in small groups in the Learning Lounge.
Non Negotiables
· Tier 3 vocabulary relating to specific themes
· Strong language structures and guidelines for talk
· Statutory elements of scheme of work must be taught
· All children given opportunity to express ideas, opinions
· Evidence of lessons recorded in big jotters or individual books
· Lessons taught in the order given on the curriculum map
· Split classes to be taught sections relevant to their year groups
· Develop reflective skills of all children
· Children to complete exit slips at the end of units of work

As a result of the PSHE programme of learning, pupils at Salesbury School will
· Know and understand how to live healthy, safe, productive, capable, responsible and balanced lives
· have some basic first aid knowledge
· Be able to reflect on and clarify their own values and attitudes and explore the complex and sometimes conflicting range of values and attitudes they encounter now and in the future
· Develop skills of enterprise and skills that support them in making effective transitions, positive learning and career choices and in achieving economic wellbeing
· Understand they have the right to make informed choices and understand what influences their decisions
· Understand they have a responsibility to develop an understanding of themselves, develop empathy and the ability to work with others and maintain good relationships, develop the essential skills for future employability and better enjoy and manage their lives
· Have the knowledge and capability to take care of their health (including relationships and sex education) and mental well-being
· Build their confidence, resilience and self-esteem and to identify and manage risks
· Recognise, accept and shape their identities, to understand and accommodate difference and change, to manage emotions and to communicate constructively in a variety of settings now and in their future lives
More Able
Children in years 5 and 6 are given the responsibility of being a buddy for the children in nursery and reception classes. They help the children learn where things are in school, the routines and help to alleviate any fears they may have through supporting the children at break and lunchtimes. There are also planned activities which the children complete together.
Support
Some children need additional help, either in the short term or long term and at Salesbury School we endeavour to provide this through
learning lounge activities, including life skills lessons
one: one support when needed. this may be through stories, mindfulness activities, Lego therapy
team building activities in small groups
Enrichment
We strive to provide a rich PSHE curriculum, including a range of extra curricular activities. These include
